Online Orientation - Section 8
- Locations
Yuba College is one college in the Yuba Community College District.
Other colleges/centers in the District include:
- Woodland Community College
- Clear Lake Center
- Beale AFB Educational Center
All of the colleges/centers within the District use the same curriculum.
Therefore if a class such as Biology 4 is closed at Yuba, but still
open at Woodland, and you are able/willing to drive to the Woodland
campus, you would be taking the same course.
- Teaching Modality
In addition to regular lecture/lab type courses, Yuba Community College
District offers a rapidly expanding number of courses through its Distributive
Education Program. These include:
- Interactive Television Courses (ITV)
These classes are televised at a set time each week over the local cable
system. They are broadcast from two ITV classrooms on the Yuba College
campus. Students have the option of sitting in on the class in the ITV
classroom, or watching by T.V. The courses are called interactive because
students are able to call in and ask questions. Some students opt to
record the classes to watch at a more convenient time. Additionally,
all ITV courses are recorded at the College, and tapes are available
for viewing by students.
- Online Courses
These courses are offered over the Internet. Students enrolled in an
online class are given a password that lets them enter the course web
page. Typically, students are given a period of time (one week or perhaps
two weeks) to complete certain chapters/assignments. Once this period
of time expires access to that portion of the class material is blocked.
Most courses set up a chat room wherein the instructor poses a question
and requires students to discuss the question in the chat room. While
the initial intent of offering online courses was to serve students
who live too far from campus to commute, experience has demonstrated
that many online students are “regular” students who enroll
in several traditional lecture classes and then complete their schedule
for the semester by adding one or two online courses. Students who have
good time management and organizational skills do well in the online
environment. Students lacking those particular skills tend to not do
very well.
