49er History

The Yuba College 49ers are the first 49er athletic mascot. Harold J. “Sam” Sperbeck, a newspaper sports reporter and eventual powerful Yuba County politician and civic leader, is credited with the idea. In the 1930’s (Yuba College was founded in 1927) he proposed, as a sports writer, a nickname for Yuba College’s athletic teams, the “49ers”. The nickname is not only original but also appropriate to the region as Marysville, one of the oldest cities in California, served as “a gateway to the mother lode”. A historical synopsis of Marysville can be read here.

The 1930’s proposal predates other sport franchises and academic institutions such as the San Francisco 49ers, University North Carolina-Charlotte, and Long Beach State.
