Smith believes in Williams, rest of Bears offensive line - (Date Last Updated: 03-29-2010)

March 26, 2010

By: Larry Mayer | Last Updated: 3/26/2010 3:27 PM LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Lovie Smith has faith and confidence in the Bears offensive line, especially when it comes to the development of promising young left tackle Chris Williams.

The 2008 first-round draft pick excelled late last season after being switched from right tackle to left tackle following an injury to veteran free-agent acquisition Orlando Pace.

Chris Williams showed promise while starting the final five games last season at left tackle.
“To have Chris Williams finish up the season [at left tackle] was big,” Smith said. “We drafted him to be our left tackle. To see him move over there and play well, he finished off the season strong.”

After being slowed by a back injury as a rookie, Williams started the first 11 games at right tackle last year before replacing Pace on the left side. The 14th overall pick in the 2008 draft is a natural left tackle who possesses the traits needed to excel at the important position.

“He’s that kind of athlete,” Smith said. “He’s going against the best defensive end, best rusher, blindside, all of that. Chris has great size, but he’s an athlete, a knee-bender. He has power. He’s a competitor.

“You don’t really draft a right tackle in the first round that early. You normally draft a left tackle to do some of those things.”

Williams could be lining up next to another promising young lineman in 2010, although the Bears have not yet determined whether Frank Omiyale will play left guard or right tackle. Omiyale struggled at times while starting 12 games at left guard last year in his first season with the Bears.

“If he ends up being our right tackle, that’s a good thing,” Smith said. “But going into it, we’re not going to say for sure he’s the right tackle. We’ll see how some of the other players come into it too. I haven’t even really told Frank right now. He knows he can be in a couple different spots.”

Where Omiyale lines up in 2010 could be impacted by the acquisition of a player or players in the draft or free agency. The Bears also want to give unproven prospects such as guards Lance Louis and Johan Asiata and tackle James Marten a chance to compete for playing time.

“We’re excited to see some of our young players,” Smith said. “Those guys will get an opportunity too.”

One thing that appears certain is that center Olin Kreutz will return for his 13th season. The six-time Pro Bowler had surgery on his lower leg, but the Bears aren’t worried about him being out for long. After all, Kreutz has started 118 consecutive games dating back to 2002 when he last missed one contest after undergoing an appendectomy.

“If you know Olin, it won’t be an issue at all,” Smith said. “He’ll be back this offseason ready to go, definitely before [training] camp. I’ve been around Olin too many years. Experience has taught me not to question him not taking care of his body. He’s been in the building as much as anyone has. He probably caught me this week since I’m at the owners meetings [in Orlando].”

National Signing Day hits Yuba-Sutter area - (Date Last Updated: 02-05-2010)

By Andy Arrenquin/Appeal-Democrat
National Signing Day came and went on Wednesday and two Mid-Valley area players signed national letters of intent to play college football this fall.

Yuba College offensive lineman LeDeven Kirkland signed with Georgia State University, where he will be a member of the school's first-ever football team.

Kirkland, a 6-foot-5, 340-pound tackle from Miami, will join a Panthers team, which will compete in the Colonial Athletic Association and will play its home games at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

At GSU, Kirkland will play for a guy who knows a thing or two about manning the trenches in head coach Bill Curry. Formerly the head coach at Georgia Tech, Alabama and Kentucky, Curry was an all-pro center and played for some of the greatest coaches of all time during his 12-year NFL career.

Curry was the starting center for Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl I and also started Super Bowls III and V.

Phillips, Plisco Named All-American By College Sporting News Long Snapper Dustin Phillips Among Those Selected To The Fabulous Fifty Team - (Date Last Updated: 01-29-2010)

Dustin Phillips becomes the second ODU Football Monarch to earn All-America honors in 2009.

College Sporting News 2009 FCS Fabulous Fifty All-American Team

NORFOLK, Va. -- More All-American honors continued to roll in for the first year Old Dominion football program on Tuesday afternoon. Long snapper Dustin Phillips (Woodland, Calif.) was among the 50 student-athletes named to the 2009 edition of the Fabulous Fifty Team for Division I Football Championship Subdivision All-American honors from The College Sporting News. Punter Jonathan Plisco (Newport News, Va.), who was already named a First Team All-American by the Associated Press and a Second Team All-American by The Sports Network earlier this month, earned Honorable Mention status.

Phillips becomes the second Monarch in its first season of FCS play to earn All-American status. A redshirt sophomore, he helped teammate Plisco become the nation's top punter in the FCS and also helped snapped the ball to kicker Drew Hareza (McDonald, Pa.), who in turn scored 71 points for the Monarchs this season going 7-of-13 on field goals and 50-of-51 on PATs.

Plisco, meanwhile, earns his third All-America distinction, after leading the FCS in punting. He finished the 2009 season averaging a nation-leading 44.84 yards per punt and consistantly ranked among the top punters nationally in the FCS throughout the year. He made 57 punts with 18 going 50 yards more, 26 inside the opponent 20, and seven for a touchback. The left footer averaged over 50 yards per punt in games with Chowan and Savannah State and posted a career-high 76-yard punt in victory over Campbell.

The Old Dominion football team, in its inaugural season of FCS football, concluded the 2009 slate at 9-2 overall as the winningest FCS start-up program in history. The Monarchs ended the year on a six-game win streak and will take on national semifinalist William & Mary and perennial top 25 member Cal-Poly in 2010, before entering the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), the toughest FCS conference in the nation,

Yuba DE Nelson signs with Iowa State - (Date Last Updated: 12-17-2009)

December 17, 2009 12:03:00 AM
By Ryan Klocke/Appeal-Democrat

He moved from Miami to a "place nobody knows about" to play football.
Now Yuba College's Rony Nelson is relocating again — this time to the Big 12.
The explosive defensive end made it official Wednesday when he signed his national letter of intent to play for Iowa State.

"Very exciting, I thought this day would never come, that I'd never achieve it," Nelson said. "All of the steps I had to climb...and now I've reached the top — the Big 12."

Nelson's steps included running over offensive lineman and flattening quarterbacks. On a team that defines itself with its defense, Nelson was one of the cornerstones. When the team needed a big stop, the 6-foot-1 250 pounder was invariably the one who could make the play.

"When he needed to dominate the game, he dominated," said 49ers' defensive coordinator Tomas Rodriguez.

By the end of the 49ers' 5-5 campaign, Nelson had established himself as one of the most dominating defensive players in California. He led the state in sacks (16.5) and did the same with tackles for losses (24.5).

That skill drew interest from East Carolina and Florida International as well, but the lure of playing against top level teams helped lure the former Sunshine State resident to Ames, Iowa.

And once he is there, Nelson said he will immediately be looking to make an impact for the Cyclones, who finished 6-6 this year including an upset of Nebraska.

When he's not on the field, where the coaches told him "he will play right away," Nelson will be working toward a kinesiology degree.

And it's all thanks to moving to a place where coaches like Rodriguez and program head Ted Hoal were ready to harp on Nelson for any mistake he made on the field or in the classroom.

"Without that I'd still be the knucklehead I was when I got here," he said.

Asiata Now A Chicago Bear Blocker - (Date Last Updated: 04-29-2009)

Yuba College saw its third former football player in three consecutive years sign a NFL contract on Monday.

Johan Asiata, a two-year offensive tackle for the 49ers, (2004-06) signed with the Chicago Bears as a preferred free agent for the 2009 season.

He joins Rodney Hannah, who recently re-signed with the Dallas Cowboys, and Ronnie Sykes, who inked a contract with the Kansas City Chiefs last year, as the third former Yuba football player to get a shot in the pros.

Former UNLV offensive lineman Johan Asiata (pronounced "YO-han AH-c-AH-tah") has signed a free-agent contract with the Chicago Bears as part of a nine-man group of undrafted players to ink a deal with the NFL team.

Asiata earned honorable mention All-Mountain West Conference in 2008 after starting all 12 games along the Rebel line for the second consecutive season. Asiata, who played 11 games at left guard and one at right tackle, did not allow a sack as a senior.

A native of New Zealand, Asiata graduated from the Youth Challenge Academy in Hawaii but did not play football until attending Yuba College in Marysville, Calif. At Yuba his position coach was Offensive Line coach Todd Anderson, a former NFL player himself. Johan studied and worked very hard with coach Anderson earning All Bay Valley Conference both years at Yuba. After junior college, he signed with Mike Sanford's Rebels and redshirted his first year on campus in 2006 before becoming a two-year starter.
