Yuba's Redshirts both sign scholarships..... - (Date Last Updated: 10-11-2007)

Two "Big" men who were both redshirting for Yuba College Men's Basketball last season have both signed full scholarships to play at four year universities.
Eric Wahlander a 6'10 275 pound center from Sweden spent the 2006-07 season redshirting with Yuba Basketball and has signed a scholarship to play in Hawaii at Hawaii Pacific University.
National recruit Festus Ezeli who was a 17 year old greyshirt for 2 seasons at Yuba College has signed at Vanderbilt Univerity in the SEC. Vanderbilt which is known as the "Harvard" of the south "will be a great fit for Ezeli"
said Coach Cornelius," Festus is an extremely bright young man with either a future as a doctor or playing in the NBA. It is tough to loose a young man who spent two years learning the game with you but Festus is in a great situation at Vanderbilt where he will redshirt this year and get 5 years of scholarship paid for!"
Festus walked into Coach Cornelius' office as a 6'10 260 pound 16 year old and asked to be taught. This past summer Festus was offerd scholarships by over 30 high major programs including National Champion Florida and runner up Ohio State.UConn,West Virgina,Minnesota and UNLV.
Yuba College basketball is very happy for the success of these two young men!!!!

Zach Andrews signs pro contract!! - (Date Last Updated: 08-14-2007)

Former Yuba College Basketball favorite Zach Andrews has decided to continue his basketball career by signing a lucrative deal to play one season for Santa Palo Basketball in Spain. Zach, a 6'8 high flying power forward from Cordova High School in Sacramento played 2 years for Coach Cornelius helping the 49'ers to an "Elite 8" in 2004 and a 24-7 overall record. He was also well known for jumping over an opposing player for an alley oop dunk that was featured as the # 1 Play of the day" on SportCenter which is still widely viewed on YouTube.
After a great career at Yuba, Zach signed to play at Bradley University with former Yuba College teammate Lawrence Wright. As a junior, Zach helped Bradley to a 22-11 record and an appearance in the "NCAA Sweet 16." He followed that up with a 22 win season as a senior and led Bradley to a NIT appearance. Zach also graduated this last spring with a degree in Theatre Arts and would like to be an actor when his playing career is over.
Zach signed with the Spanish Pro team after a tryout with the Sacramento Kings in June of 2007.

Yuba possibly to loose two big men-both to scholarships! - (Date Last Updated: 07-02-2007)

As the summer gets going and the recruiting heats up, four year colleges are on the prowl looking for big time basketball players. After a successfull 27-8 season, the 49'ers could loose two players who have spent over a year developing in the 49'er basketball program. The first player-Eric Wahlander is a 6'10 275 pound physical speciman from Sweden. Eric was a redshirt in the Yuba program this last season because he was 3 units short after transferring from a four year university. An extremely hard worker who spent hours in the weight room and gym, Eric has just signed a full scholarship to play next year at Hawaii Pacific University. Eric finished this last year at Yuba with a 3.6GPA and will transfer to Hawaii with 3 years still to play. It came down to money-said Coach Cornelius. We looked at his situation and even though Eric wanted to stay and help Yuba back to another "Elite 8" the cost of him being at a Community College were such that it just made since to go play on a full scholarship. The coaching staff at Yuba is very happy for the opportunity that Eric has in front of him!
The second post player that has been developing at Yuba College is Festus Ezeli.
Nigerian born, Festus walked into the basketball office in December of 2006 and asked to be taught. At 6'10 255 pounds and only 16 years old at the time, Festus has quickly developed into one of the most recruited players ever to come from Yuba College. After spending the 2006-07 season as a greyshirt, Festus now is being recruited by UCLA, Stanford, CAL, UNLV, Minnesota, USC and about 30 others. Without ever having played in a high school or college game, Festus has offers from schools all over the country. With a 3.85 GPA at Yuba with almost 30 units done, Festus will decide shortly if he wants to stay and gain valuble playing experience at Yuba or sign with a college basketball power and possibly redshirt in 07-08. Either way, Yuba basketball is proud of these two young men and how far they have come this previous year at Yuba College.

Hannah who played for Coach Cornelius on the BVC Championship team of 2003 and the schools first ever "Elite 8" team of 2004 signed a basketball scholarship to the University of Houston. After a junior year which highlighted a win over # 4 ranked Louisville in which Hannah scored 14 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, Hannah deceided to hang up the hoop shoes and give football a try. In his first football season at Houston since playing his senior year at Roseville HS, Rodney caught 11 passes for 118 yards and a touchdown and caught 2 other touchdowns that were called back because of penalties. Hannah had visits with the Raiders, Jaguars, Seahawks, and Dolphins as well as the Texans and Cowboys. The Cowboys are very excited about Rodneys upside and tremendous athleticism and experts believe he has a good chance to make the roster.
