Tech PrepWhat is Tech Prep?
Tech Prep is a program with the primary goal of better preparing students for “responsible citizenship, further learning, and productive employment”. This is accomplished through the linkage of school-based knowledge to broader context of family, work, and civic life. This initiative focuses on the high school years in collaboration with the first two years of college education through the community college system.

The Tech Prep Education Act (Title IIIE) defined a Tech Prep program as a combined secondary and postsecondary education program that:

  1. Leads to an associate degree or two-year certificate;
  2. Provides technical preparation in at least one field of engineering technology, applied science, mechanical, industrial, or practical art or trade, or agriculture, health, or business;
  3. Builds student competence in mathematics, science, and communication (including applied academics) through a sequential course of study;
  4. Leads to placement in employment.

Secondary-to-postsecondary articulation is essential to create smooth transitions and reduce dropout, failure, and costly inefficiencies for students.

Articulation to the postsecondary level opens doors to a wide array of career fields and enhances upward mobility for students beyond what they could expect with only a high school diploma. Eventually, through formal articulation between secondary, two-year and four-year postsecondary education, it may be possible to eliminate the "terminal" stigma of vocational education.

YCCD currently has 34 articulation agreements with 36 high schools/ROPs in the six counties it serves: Yuba, Sutter, Colusa and parts of Glenn, Lake and Yolo Counties. The goal is to not only increase this number but to develop a more comprehensive Tech Prep program that will give high school students greater exposure to YCCD professors, programs and services. It is also the goal of YCCD to track the success of all students enrolled in the Tech Prep program and report this information to area high schools, businesses and community organizations. Creating a community that collaboratively works to ensure student success is the ultimate goal of the Tech Prep program.
