APPLICANT INFORMATION

ALL NURSING APPLICANTS:

CRIMINAL BACKGROUND SCREENING:
All students must have criminal background checks completed prior to beginning nursing programs. Forms will be sent by mail, provided at orientation sessions or may be picked up in the Nursing Department. Students are responsible for the cost of this procedure. Some convictions will prevent entry into the nursing programs. Students may call the nursing department for specific information related to convictions. Clinical agencies have the right to refuse to accept students with certain convictions.

DRUG TESTING:
All applicants who have received a conditional offer of admission to nursing programs must successfully complete pre-admission testing for the presence of illegal drugs. Any applicant who refuses to take the test will not be offered admission to the program. Verification of positive test results will result in withdrawal of offer of admission.

APPLICATION TO BOTH VOCATIONAL NURSING (LVN) AND ASSOCIATE DEGREE NURSING (RN) PROGRAMS:

You may apply to both programs. It does require different applications. When you are offered space in one program, you may accept or decline. If you accept, the application for the other program will be destroyed. For example, you are offered space in the vocational nursing program and accept, your application for the ADN program is null and void. If you decide to decline space in the VN program and wait for space in the ADN program, your application to the VN program will be destroyed.

ORIENTATION SESSIONS:
Orientation session(s) will be provided prior to the beginning of the first semester. Students will be notified well in advance of the date(s) of this event. Students must attend an orientation session. Information provided includes the following:

  1. A calendar including daily schedules, learning assignments and topics covered in classrooms and skill labs.
  2. Required books and supplies.
  3. Ordering information for name badges.
  4. Information about open skill labs (Nursing 55).
  5. Assigned instructors and instructor contact information.
  6. Information about college resources.
  7. Nursing department policies.
  8. Registration information.
  9. Other information deemed pertinent.

PRE-ADMIT ASSESSMENT TESTING:
All students who have received a conditional offer of admission to either nursing program must successfully complete pre-entrance assessment. Yuba College uses the Evolve A2 assessment. Areas tested include Math, English and for the ADN applicant, Biological Sciences. All applicants will be provided a copy of testing results.

Those, whose score indicates a need for remediation, will be referred to appropriate resources. Students who score below 70% will have admission to the nursing program deferred for a minimum of one semester. Completion of remediation and re-testing is required before space in the program will be granted. Applicants have up to one year to complete the assessment testing at the required level. After one year, students who have not met the requirement will be moved to the end of the wait list. If the applicant has not been successful after two years, their name will be removed from the wait list.

The Evolve A2 assessment test has been extensively researched and has been shown to accurately predict likelihood of success in the nursing programs. The 70% pass level for the A2 exam is the score required by the California Community College Chancellor’s Office.

CHANGE IN SELECTION FORMULA:
Students admitted in the Fall 2009 and after (including those on the wait list) must meet selection criteria identified by the California Community College Chancellor’s Office. This formula includes the following:

  • Overall college GPA
  • English GPA (English 1A or equivalent)
  • Core Biology GPA (Anatomy, Physiology and Microbiology)
  • Core Biology course repeats (repeats lower score)
  • The result is a percentage and students must have 70% or higher to be eligible for admission. In addition, grades of “C” or higher are required in all prerequisite, support courses and degree requirements.

Applicants who do not meet the admission requirements will be notified as soon as possible.
